AON INVESTS IN A STRONGER MATHS FOUNDATION AT ITIRELENG PRIMARY SCHOOL
Mpumalanga, South Africa
It is with great delight to share on our third intervention of 2026. We launched another impactful My Maths Buddy training program alongside AON at Itireleng Primary School in Lynnville, eMalahleni which is also widely known as Witbank.
During this intervention, our reach was 62 Grade 6 learners, which marked our
first learner-focused workshop at the school and 4 Maths teachers whom had already been familiar with the program from previous involvement. Over the two-day intervention, classrooms were filled with curiosity, active engagement and a renewed sense of confidence, as both learners and teachers embraced new ways of understanding Maths.

Itireleng Primary school is rooted in a community known for its resilience and strong working-class history. eMalahleni has long been shaped by industry and movement, with families who place deep value on education as a pathway to opportunity. Schools like Itireleng Primary play a vital role in nurturing learner potential and supporting young learners as they build the foundational skills that will carry them into higher grades and brighter futures.

Being present in spaces like this affirm that our impact goes beyond the classrooms, contributing to the growth of communities that are striving forward every day.
The findings gained helped us assess the school’s readiness and areas of support. This process enables our team to design a tailored program that responds directly to the needs of both teachers and learners, ensuring maximum impact and to close the gaps in Maths education.
We do pre and post assessments to determine the baseline and again later down the line to measure progress during and at the end of the programme.

AON representatives Ms Nomsa Mophuting and Mr Letlhogonolo Motshegwa joined the workshops on the 11th of February, bringing with them not only their presence and support, but also stationery packs for the selected learners and Maths teachers.
AONs involvement added a sense of pride and encouragement to the experience, reminding our team that this journey is supported by partners who genuinely care about education and learner success. The Circuit Manager, Mrs Mamcy Mahlangu, has partnered with the My Maths Buddy project for the last 5 years and is delighted to have yet another school on the program this year.

Our team created an incredible learners activity and engagement in discussions. Learners volunteered answers and enthusiastically participated in guided exercises.
This level of responsiveness allowed for targeted support, ensuring that learners do not simply practice procedures, but also developed a clearer understanding of the reasoning behind each step. At the same time, teachers were supported in identifying manifestations that point to barriers in their learners understanding. They were guided on how to handles these manifestations to encourage learner participation and achieve real understanding.

We are grateful to AON for continuing to walk this journey with us and for helping create opportunities that empower both educators and learners to grow, improve, and thrive.
Their commitment to advancing quality Maths education is helping strengthen learner confidence, build teaching capacity, and enrich the overall learning culture at Itireleng Primary School. Together, we are creating a pathway for learners to develop a deeper understanding of Maths, achieve improved results, and open doors to future career opportunities.
