IDWALA INDUSTRIAL HOLDINGS CONTRIBUTES TO MATHS EDUCATION IN NORTH WEST
Naledi Primary School, North West Province
Naledi Primary School in Ottosdal, North West province is one of three schools sponsored by Idwala Industrial Holdings. Since the launch of the My Maths Buddy Program at the school in August last year, the impact has been remarkable. Over the past 12 months, 16 Maths teachers were fully trained and equipped with Effective Maths Teaching Kits with the purpose of bringing better understanding of Maths to their learners.
Since the seminars of this program are accredited by SACE (South African Council of Educators), all 16 Maths teachers were able to write SACE assessments and pass them during the program earning themselves additional professional development points.
The My Maths Buddy program is closely aligned with the ATP (Annual Teacher Program – provided by the DBE to teachers) and all the materials are CAPS aligned providing a solid back up to teachers in their quest to teach learners with greater understanding and ability to apply what they learn.
These materials and new skills turned out to be very handy for Mr. Mokonayne, the grade 6 & 7 Maths teacher at Naledi Primary school. He immediately began to apply the newly acquired skills and resources with his learners during the My Maths Buddy Club activities.
The Club is an extramural activity and in-class activity that teachers do as part of the My Maths Buddy program and is focused on making sure that learners fully grasp the fundamental basics of Mathematics.
Because ofMr. Mokonyane’s passion for teaching Maths, last year he won 1st place in the District: Excellence in Teaching Mathematics competition, and just last month he also won 3rd place in the Provincial Excellence in Teaching Mathematics – GET Phase competition!

Innovative approach
Mr. Mokonyane is a very creative and passioned teacher. During the Club activities he goes beyond the call of duty to make sure that his learners understand Maths very well. He makes sure their process of learning Maths is very practical and learners gain true understanding.
Improved Maths results
Last year, just 3 months into the program his grade 6 & 7 learners average marks have grown by 5% and 6% respectively. Learners in his classes love studying Maths and are constantly engaged. Their understanding of Maths grows every day and Mr. Mokonyane definitely guarantees these learners bright future!
All Maths teachers at Naledi Primary school graduated the My Maths Buddy Program this year and are successfully applying the tools with their learners.
