The My Maths Buddy program goal is to improve learners’ understanding of Maths – what we call the Knowledge phase. It is hard to apply something if there is a lot of confusion about it. For example, if a learner doesn’t understand what ‘perimeter’ means they will never measure it correctly. Do you see this? Confusion about a topic leads to misapplication or non application of that topic. It does eventually lead to lower marks.
The My Maths Buddy program is designed in the way that it helps to identify learners’ confusions and provides specific tools that handle these confusions.
Special program pre-assessments allow us to identify gaps in Maths knowledge that learners have, and address those gaps effectively during the My Maths Buddy Club extramural activities that the teachers are trained to run with their learners. Each prior grade that a learner did in school is assessed, picking up gaps as early as Grade R. And believe it or not the gaps starting to form in grade R already.
And as a building is not able to stand firmly without a foundation, a learner cannot succeed in Maths if their foundation in Maths is not understood or partially understood. Grade R through to Grade 3 is the foundation and this is where we start. During term 3 one of the schools on the program – Sikhothina Primary school – completed a Correction Program addressing gaps in Grade R – and they achieved amazing results!
THIS HARD WORK IS PAYING OFF!
The latest results reveal an exciting achievement:
- 78% of evaluated learners improved their pre-assessment results and closed up their gaps in their grade R knowledge!
- The original pass was recorded at 75% and the results now show that it moved up to 91%!
- There is an impressive 16% improvement in average Grade R Maths knowledge!
- One of the learners achieved an outstanding improvement of 62%!
These results represent learning gaps being addressed, concepts becoming clearer and learners taking meaningful steps towards a stronger understanding of Maths.
