KNORR-BREMSE – MY MATHS BUDDY PROJECT: NOT JUST A PARTNERSHIP BUT PASSION FOR BETTER MATHS EDUCATION IN SOUTH AFRICA
Cresslawn Primary School, Kempton Park, Gauteng
In February 2024 the My Maths Buddy program was introduced to the Maths teachers and learners at Cresslawn Primary School in Kempton Park, thanks to the dedicated support from the executives and staff of Knorr-Bremse South Africa.
The Knorr-Bremse Group is the global market leader in braking systems and a leading supplier of other systems for rail and commercial vehicles and recently celebrated their 120th anniversary.
Engineering and innovation are at the heart of Knorr-Bremse activities and Mathematics is an integral part of this. Thousands of the finest engineers and other professionals are part of this organization, and they understand the importance of Maths in children’s education.
We cannot thank the executives and staff of Knorr-Bremse South Africa enough for their support of Maths education at Cresslawn Primary School for the past two years. We were also very touched by their staff’s personal contribution to the project where they took the time and engaged with the learners directly, encouraging them to learn and excel in Maths.
In their true innovative style, they presented how Mathematics helped them to become the professionals they are now and how it helped them to reach for their dreams.

| For the last 2 years 186 learners and 8 Maths teachers have been enrolled onto the program. From the beginning of 2025 the Maths teachers formed the My Maths Buddy Clubs where they help learners with in-class and extramural Maths understanding activities. This extra work and dedication of the Maths teachers in the school keeps on creating a positive impact. In fact, in 2024, the My Maths Buddy Club run by the grade 5 Maths teacher,Mrs. Tshegofatso Lekgae, took 3rd place in the annual standings amongst all the active My Maths Buddy Clubs across South Africa. Earlier this year she got acknowledge for her hard work and dedication to her job. |

As a result of the activities the average marks of the learners on the program has grown by 10% since the program began and this is testament to the partnership between the school’s Maths Department, the My Maths Buddy project team and Knorr-Bremse. This is real teamwork!
