PETRA DIAMONDS CULLINAN MINE SUPPORTS MATHS TEACHERS. IN CULLINAN AREA

For the past 10 years the My Maths Buddy project has worked with various primary schools in the Cullinan area thanks to the support of the Petra Diamonds Cullinan mine.
In December 2024, 10 new Maths teachers enrolled onto the My Maths Buddy program from 4 different primary schools in the area. The purpose of the program was to empower these Maths teachers with knowledge and skills that will allow them to grow as Maths professionals and to improve their own understanding of Maths thus enabling them to teach this subject better.
One of the main principles of the My Maths Buddyprogram for teachers is that;
The ‘Blind leading the Blind’ concept is applied. And it is not to say that the Maths teachers are unaware of what they teach, but in the last 13 years of working with teachers we find that around 95% of Maths teachers experience non-understanding or partial understanding of some of the Maths topics. We also find that this becomes a barrier for them to teach these topics with full understanding.
We are coming to the end of the program cycle with the 10 Maths teachers and all of them have completed the program successfully and passed their SACE assessments.
Along with the SACE assessments we also run program assessments with the purpose of checking their understanding of Maths topics that they are teaching and we are pleased to announce that their tests are showing noticeable improvement.
Every single teacher came out of this training empowered, with new skills and knowledge that they can apply with their learners and help them succeed in Maths. Here are just a couple of the wins that we would like to share with you:

I came across lots of Maths words that I used to think I knew about, only to discover in today’s seminar that I did not have the correct understanding of these words.Thank you for the well-prepared workshop. “This seminar was very educational and empowering. I now have knowledge I never used to have before. I used to see my learners have problems in class with various Maths topics and concepts.
