Nelson Mandela famously said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” This is a powerful and true statement. Education builds young minds and if the education given to our children is of a good quality our children will strive, achieve their dreams and our society will thrive economically and socially. One of the most important subjects in education that make the biggest difference and contributes to good economics is Mathematics.
IS PURE MATHS IMPORTANT FOR OUR CHILDREN’S FUTURE?
In South Africa, Mathematics has become a very controversial subject. Often, we hear things like “Maths is not an important subject” or “How will knowing how to calculate the size of an angle help me to survive in life?” On the surface, it seems totally logical. Truly, how on earth knowing how to calculate the size of an angle will help someone survive, earn an income and become the best at what they do? Many parents and children will say that they do not see the link between these two and this is not their fault.
WHAT NONE OF US WERE EVER TAUGHT AT SCHOOL
What teachers do not tell us at school is this: It is not the correct calculations of angles that will make the difference in your life and your standard of living. It is the skills and abilities that your child develops in critical thinking and problem solving while they learn and apply the data on angles as well as other Mathematical concepts that matters. And these skills are what our children truly need to succeed. Especially, in the current economic environment. These skills are vital to our children’s survival and to the economic survival of South Africa, as well as to your company which is composed of many individuals who went through the educational system.
The My Maths Buddy Community Project has been in operation for the last 13 years helping children understand Maths and succeed in this subject. As usual during this time of the year we launch the Nelson Mandela Day Drive 2026 campaign to help more learners in South Africa succeed in Maths!
Throughout the year we receive requests from different schools to participate in the My Maths Buddy Program and usually we pick 3-4 schools that are the most excited to be part of the My Maths Buddy movement. We then raise funds to sponsor a group of learners and teachers for each of these schools.
This year we have the following schools nominated for the Nelson Mandela Day Drive:
The My Maths Buddy program is minimally a 12-month long program and is designed for Maths teachers and learners.
- To sponsor 1 teacher for a full year on the program is R12,000.00 (including all materials, training, support, assessments, evaluation and monitoring and reporting).
- To sponsor 1 learner for a full year on the program R7,500.00 (including all materials, training, support, assessments, evaluation and monitoring and reporting).
Sponsor one or more learners or teachers and join us in the crusade to bring greater Maths understanding and success for 120 learners and 29 Maths teachers as part of celebrating Nelson Mandela Day 2026!
1. Participate in the campaign by sponsoring 1 or more Maths teachers and/or learners.
2. The South African government has proclaimed July 2026 as Nelson Mandela Month and many corporates will participate in activities during the whole month.We will be holding a 67 Minute Launch Event with the nominated schools and invite you to participate and have your representative engage with the learners and inspire them to do well in Maths by sharing their personal experiences of how Maths helped them become successful.
3. This 67 Minute Launch Event of the programs will be a fantastic opportunity to engage with the community. We will take many photos and share these with you.
4. Shortly thereafter we will begin the program, and you will receive quarterly reports so you can see how your support is helping these learners become better at Maths and start opening more opportunities for themselves in the future.
Your company will receive a SARS 18A tax exemption certificate on request.
